Stress Management

Stress Management is one of the major components of Emotional Intelligence.

Stress management, composed of stress tolerance and impulse control, concerns one’s ability to withstand stress without falling apart, losing control or going under. Success in this area is determined by the ability to remain calm, rarely impulsive and to cope well under pressure.

In the workplace these skills are vital especially when one has to face tight deadlines, juggle the many demands on one’s time, find an appropriate balance between home and work life, negotiate interpersonal relationships and deal with personal insecurities and perceptions. Many organisations around the world assist their employees to grow in their ability to manage stress because of the detrimental impact it has on individuals and the bottom line.

Years of scientific research have unveiled the interconnectedness of the heart and brain and their combined impact on emotions and stress. This has highlighted the necessity of a holistic, neuropsychological approach to developing Emotional Intelligence and stress management facilities in individuals.

Stress Facts

  • Heart disease costs countries billions annually.

  • The American Institute of Stress reports that stress accounts for 74-90% of all visits to physicians and that it costs American businesses at least $200 billion a year.

  • An United Nations Report called job stress” the 21st century disease”.

  • In United Kingdom as much as 10% of GNP goes to stress-related costs.

  • The Asian economies have similar issues. According to the National Police Agency in Japan suicides totaled 23, 000 in 1996. Double the number of traffic fatalities.

  • The work place is the greatest single source of stress globally.

Dealing with stress is not a question of if, it is a question of when and how often? The quality of one’s life is profoundly impacted by their ability to manage stress.

The effects of stress on the individual are innumerable.

When we are exposed to too much stress, and it is unmanaged, we experience this as tension, strain, fatigue or frustration. This has an immediate psychological and physiological effect on us. This effect involves more than fourteen hundred physical and chemical reactions in conjunction with over thirty different hormones and neurotransmitters. If left un-checked this can radically deplete ones overall functioning having major short term and long term consequences for the individual and the organisation.

Research has highlighted the following consequences of unhealthy emotions and stress: less ability to think clearly, less efficiency in decision making, less ability to communicate clearly, reduced physical co-ordination, higher risk of blood pressure, reduced concentration and memory functioning, irritability, poor judgment, burnout, decreased productivity, increased absenteeism, reduced employee engagement.

Aim of the Tandem Training process:

to develop the emotional and physiological competencies of individuals to effectively manage stress and achieve optimal functioning in all areas of life.

“Adopting the right attitude can convert a negative stress into a positive one.”

The approach is scientific and holistic

Four components make up the approach for developing Emotional Intelligence and they are facilitated over a three day process:

  1. Assessment: Identification of each delegate’s stressors including monitoring of the heart rate variability and the physiological levels of stress.

  2. Feedback: Individual feedback about psychological barriers restricting optimal stress management.

  3. Training: The latest research on stress management is presented with the emphasis on practical techniques. This includes the only stress technique that can be used 24/7.

  4. Development Plans: Each individual develops a personal strategy to assist the transition into daily functioning and promote prolonged implementation.
